Karaikudi Chettinad Indian Restaurant
Scarborough is proud to represent its multi-cultural offerings when it comes to delicious cuisines from around the world. Right along the strip of Kennedy Road, you can immerse yourself in the flavours of Arabic, Mediterranean, Italian, and Greek all within a few steps from one another. This month we’re giving the authentic flavours of South Indian cuisine a taste and we’re taking you along for the ride!
Karaikudi Chettinad Indian Restaurant has been serving classic South Indian dishes from the Chettinad region since its opening in 2009. Along with other popular Northern and Indo-Chinese Fare (like Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka and Hakka dishes) this restaurant has a lot to offer. So, rest assured that there will be something for everyone you’re dining with.
Food
If you don’t know where to start, we’re here to help. From a large variety of vegetarian to non-vegetarian dishes, there is a grand fusion of flavours that will leave you wanting to try it all. Luckily, we’ve narrowed down a few of our favourites: chicken biriyani, masala dosa, mango lassi, and garlic naan.
The dosas are exactly what you expect them to be – a freshly made thin, savoury, crispy pancake made from a fermented rice and lentil flour batter. Dosas are a staple in South Indian cusine and if you’re a fan of crepes, you’ll no doubt be a fan of dosas. We opted for the masala dosa which includes a potato masala filling and is accompanied with a variety of dips (coconut chutney and sambar – made with roasted lentls, chilies, coriander and curry leaves).
While the dosas are light, the portion makes a perfect appetizer for sharing. Karaikudi also offers plain dosa, mysore, ghee, cheese, onion, podi, egg and their extra large dosas that are 3-feet long! Now’s that something to rave about.
The chicken biriyani was cooked Chettinad style, with aromatic fresh herbs and spices, basmati rice, served with Raitha (a condiment made with yogurt and vegetables), egg, and gravy. The rice had the right amount of spiciness to it, and the garlic naan made the perfect complement to go with all the delicious sauces from our meals.
As for the mango lassi, mango lovers NEED to give this yogurt-based smoothie a try. Commonly known as a popular drink among Indian restaurants, mango lassis are refreshing, creamy, and simply delicious. Their sweetness and tropical flavour screams summer and there is no doubt that Karaikudi’s mango lassi will be our go-to hot-weather refreshment!
If you’re coming for the lunch buffet, expect a good deal with a great selection of items to choose from. There’s even offerings only available at lunch like Thali meals!
Atmosphere & Service
This casual spot hones in on its warm and welcoming environment that make experiencing South Indian cuisine that much better. There is plenty of seating with private dining rooms and a party hall that can be booked for special occasions. Karaikudi is clean and well decorated with reclaimed heritage rosewood pillars, straight from the mansions of the Chettinad region in South India. Their authentic yet modern touch creates a pleasant ambience that really makes you feel like you’re dining in a true Indian restaurant.
For our first experience, Karaikudi did not disappoint. We especially loved how fast the service was – all the food came out shortly after ordering and the staff was friendly and courteous to our dining needs. Also, a big bonus if you become a reoccurring customer; Karaikudi offers a loyalty program based on points collected per bill that can later be redeemed for restaurant credit. It’s a win-win for delicious food!
We know it can be difficult to find a good and authentic Indian restaurant in the GTA, but that is exactly what Karaikudi delivers. Whether you come from an Indian upbringing or have grown to love the flavours of Indian dishes, Karaikudi is the perfect spot to experience the rich taste of Chettinad flavour. We can’t wait to return.
